The  hour-long clinic demonstrated basic badminton skills and footwork, and discussed the rules and the lines drawn on a badminton court. NMBA officials, members, including players who represented the CNMI in the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa, and other community members participated in the clinic.

The clinic started with a brief discussion about badminton, followed by a demonstration of the basics of holding a racket, and the two grips used, which are forehand and backhand.

The participants then used a balloon instead of a birdie to learn how to control one’s racket. They also threw shuttlecocks across the court. “It helps us get a feel of the correct form when swinging a racket,” NMBA player Janelle Pangelinan said.

Participants in the Northern Marianas Badminton Association clinic are about to perform a footwork drill at the TSL Sports Complex on Tuesday.

In addition, clinic participants worked on their footwork. “Footwork is very important because badminton is a fast-paced game,” Pangelinan said.

Toward the end of the clinic, the rules and lines of the court were explained. “We were expecting teachers to attend the clinic so that when school starts, they can add badminton to their PE classes,” Pangelinan said. Unfortunately, only one teacher, who teaches at an elementary school, was present.

But NMBA will host more clinics throughout the year, and will target every age group in the CNMI, she added.
